Grafia, Association of Professional Graphic Designers in Finland, invited three creative agencies to pitch for the redesign of their quarterly magazine. Grafia was looking for an inviting design and new ideas combined with a lucid structure and good legibility. Our proposal was chosen, and the first issue designed by us came out in May.

Besides recreating the look, we reworked the content together with the editorial team. The new portfolio section in the middle of the magazine is one of our ideas that was realised. It showcases contemporary designers and their work, accompanied by interviews and case-studies.

Typographic and paper choises were given extra careful attention as the audience concists of our sharp-eyed colleagues. The strict typographic palette features two font families, Graphik and Lyon. Three different types of paper are used for different sections: structured paper on the cover, uncoated on inner pages and glossy to distinguish the portfolio section.

The redesigned received an enthusiastic response. It makes us particularly proud to know that behind the good feedback are the professionals we appreciate.

Vuoden Huiput — The Best of the Year is the Finnish equivalent of D&AD. It is the most important competition for graphic design and advertising in Finland. The aim of this annual competition is to emphasise the importance of the work done by visual communication professionals in advertising and design.

The Best of the Year advertising and design competition is organised into 16 categories evaluated by juries consisting of professionals from the fields of advertising and graphic design. We took these categories as a starting point for the visual concept for this year’s event.

Taking inspiration from modern-day icon design as well as egyptian hieroglyphs, we designed icons for each competition category plus some extra for Grafia’s comms use. The iconography plays with an eclectic mix of literal interpretation, arbitrary associations, pop culture references and humor. Glossy black foil and rough uncoated paper were used across all printed applications.

The project consisted of identity design, competition and exhibition invitations, gala dinner cards, menus and cut-out icons, gala presentation concept, print ads, web banners, exhibition graphics and the year book.

The year book we designed as a part of the whole identity presents around 130 awarded entries in 240 pages, divided into 16 categories. It also introduces the juries, altogether 66 professionals. The book is printed on bulky and rough uncoated stock. Icons on the cover are foil blocked in glossy black.

The Finnish Psychological Association asked us to redesign their magazine and give a facelift for their website. During the process, it became clear that the association's whole visual identity was in need of realignment. Instead of only magazine and website, we designed a comprehensive identity system. Additional costs compared to the initial brief were modest, and the total cost significantly smaller than if the identity design had been a separate project.

The new identity builds around the logotype that binds all three facets together: the association, the magazine and the website. The logotype plays with the psi-symbol, which is traditionally used as the symbol for psychology in the western cultures. Together with smooth uncoated paper stock, large green surfaces add warmth to the simple typographic look.

The redesigned Psykologi magazine is an exception among other Finnish association magazines. It uses a lot of lively and colorful illustrations, that range from abstract to naive to surreal.

Design process become a fun expedition, where the music and trio's thoughts led us to investigate various curious concepts. The result is a cocktail of solar corona, tetris blocks, basic forms and missing pieces.

Finnish Academy of Fine Arts (Kuvataideakatemia) is an international university focusing on the fine arts – the only one of its kind in Finland.

Working closely with the wonderful people at the Academy, we did a full-scale redesign for the website, starting from concept design workshops and information architecture wireframes all the way to layout design and art direction for photography.

One of the main goals for the redesign was to give emphasis on the students’ artwork. This was achieved by designing a-site-within-a-site gallery section that you can access everywhere on the main site. The gallery section is loosely based on a metaphor of a paper drawer full of works of art.

Development was provided by Kelvin and photography by Mikko Ryhänen at <a href="http://www.kuvaamo.com"target="_blank">Kuvaamo.

Ilona Harima — The road to enlightenment surveys the work and life of an almost forgotten Finnish artist Ilona Harima. It was published to accompany a Central Art Archives’ focus exhibition on Harima’s output from the 1920s to 60s at the Ateneum Art Museum. Harima’s fascination with themes from Hindu and Buddhist culture was extremely unusual in the Finnish art world of the time.

The book was published as a limited edition collector’s item as well as a web-publication (link) to be read on tablet or on-screen. Special care was given to make sure the text is equally readable on both printed and screen versions.

Lux, a well-established Finnish family business specializing in foundry and steel industries, asked us to redesign their brochures. As we got to know the company, it became clear that in addition to new brochures, they needed visual guidelines to unify and update their brand image. Together with the client we rethought the brief and decided to give the brand a proper facelift.

Our most delicate task was to redraw the cogwheel symbol of Lux. The original logo dates back to the first half of 20th century, and though it was very much liked in the company, it was no longer answering the needs of expanding international business. The logo had to be polished to meet the technical requirements of new media, work equally well in latin and cyrillic alphabets – and most importantly, maintain the character and soul of Lux. In the redrawing process every detail was discussed carefully, from the number and shape of the cogs, to the curves of individual letters. The new symbol is a result of long discussions, intensive listening and extensive sketching.

Besides refining the logo, we created simple guidelines for the visual identity, and designed stationary and brochure templates. The straightforward and stark aesthetics communicate what the company is about: reliability, longevity, effectiveness and tradition.

It is a tradition within the Finnish academics to celebrate a professor’s 60th birthday with a festschrift book. Times, Things & Places celebrates Jussi-Pekka Taavitsainen, professor of archaeology in Turku University. This heavy volume consists of 36 academic essays from Mr. Taavitsainen’s friends and colleagues.

As the book deals with archaeology it felt natural to make design choices that will stand the test of time. Materials and binding were given special attention. The book is case bound, cloth-like paper is used on the cover and the title is foil blocked with matt silver. The inner pages are printed on velvety uncoated paper stock. A strict grid and a two-color palette tie the variety of subjects together.

We also designed a custom-made box to hold the copy that was given to Mr. Taavitsainen at the birthday reception. The box was made by the talented bookbinder Juha Markula.

Äänen Lumo – Charm of Sound is an organisation for new sounds and experimental music, established in 1995. Their unprejudiced and curious attitude towards everything unexpected resulted in a bold and playful identity. “Please make it rather baby pink than boring”, we were instructed.

The case proved that being budget friendly doesn’t mean looking cheap. Adapting unconventional ideas allowed us to design a full identity – logo, website, stationary and marketing concept – with very modest production costs. Fill-in business cards can be used as flyers and stationary is printed on colored office paper (including the pink option). Letterheads double as stage props.

Arja Raatikainen is among Finland’s top contemporary dance choreographers with a long career and remarkable achievements. Instead of a chat in a meeting room, the brief for her company’s new visual identity was delivered as a performance in a rehearsal hall. Our task was to translate the movement into a logotype and other visual elements.

The result is a logotype that decomposes and comes together in a constant movement. It makes the spectator active too: to see the logo on the business card you have to hold it against light. Also on the website there are multiple layers to discover. The front page delivers the movement and impression, and subpages provide more detailed textual information. If you want to concentrate on the images, close the text layer and flick through the site to see fractions of past performances.

The identity was designed in collaboration with Mina Arko.

Blue1, the second largest Finnish airline, asked if its new Boeing 717 fleet could be turned into a piece of art. The answer was Flowing. It is a series of unique paint schemes for individual aircrafts – not a common concept in the airline industry.

Realising the complicated paint scheme and detailed patterns required close co-operation with decal providers, paint specialists and aircraft technology experts. First the aircraft is painted completely white, then the patterns are masked and delicate two-color gradient painted by hand. Removing the mask reveals the white lines.

The different patterns are inspired by movement of water: rain drops, waves, streams and trickles. It links the new livery concept with Blue1’s history: its previous fleet was named after Finnish lakes. Six aircrafts carrying the Flowing livery have now taken off and the concept is being continued and extended into in-flight products.

Why all this effort while most airlines are doing just fine with one livery? For Blue1 it was a natural choice since most of their customers are regular business travellers. Its founding partners have strong roots in old-school DIY code-nerdism. Nimiö was asked to design a professional and friendly face for this promising start-up.

We based the identity around a logotype which has a subtle reference to that blinking underscore from the age of DOS prompt and two-color CRT displays.

Moda is Finland's biggest knitting magazine. It combines fashion with DIY. As handicrafts have been enjoying a vogue for a while it was time to update the brand to meet the demands of new audiences. We went for a young and strong look. The expressive logotype, inspired by loops of yarns, creates a feeling that it is woven into the magazine. The white frame helps the magazine stand out in the magazine shelf.

Offering readers useful patterns and clear instructions is at the heart of Moda, but the new look also aims to inspire the readers to experiment with their style and skills. Moda’s own collection is featured as lifestyle feature stories that mix current trends with self-made garments. The fonts choices, expressive Arnhem and straightforward Akkurat, reflect the same bias – being stylistic forerunner while down-to-earth.

Three ceramic artists asked us to design a promotional catalogue showcasing their past projects for public spaces. The works include large installations, collaborative projects and smaller pieces of art, comissioned by both private and public sectors.

Like ceramic art, the bilingual catalogue speaks to both eyes and hands. The cover and section markers feature bold design with large type and red color. Elsewhere the attention is given to images. The budget was modest but allowed for a couple of extra material features: the texture of the cover asks to be touched and the inner pages are printed on smooth uncoated stock. Special saddle-stiching makes it easy to store the brochure in a binder.

The catalogue received a very good response. A year and a half after it was published, the artists are now busy realising new projects all around Finland.

MacWell wanted a bold and minimalist look. The strong black & white logotype plays with tight spacing and angular cuts. The dash is used for different studio sub-identities.

To give the identity some extra punch, the business cards are screen printed in white on a thick black card stock that has a skin-like feel to it. When you hold it in your hand, it truly stands out.
